View Full Version : Newbie questions re. Online Armor FREE

Hello all
Have just found this firewall and site - have tested this over the weekend just gone and I have got a few questions: - :?:
1. Is the latest, free version of Online Armor recognised by Windows Security Center (WSC) in Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2?
If not, will it be in a future, free version or not, or is it only the full version that is recognised?
2. I have seen posts on this forum where, after the initial install of the program, I have also indeed noticed on both of my PCs that the boot up process was very, very slow and then the Desktop hung there for 30 seconds or more? I initially thought that this was a problem with both of my PCs so I uninstalled the product of both of them.
Is this normal behaviour for the firewall? - how may times would I have to boot/reboot the PCs in order for them to load up normally without any slow boots and reboots? Please clarify?
3. How do I configure the free version to work with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) in Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2?
Does ICS work with the free version of this firewall? - if yes...how do I configure the firewall to work with ICS?
I have got a 2 PC network with a USB modem connected to 1 PC and the other PC connects via the LAN to the Internet via ICS?
Please clarify?
Finally...
4. I did receive an email from “Licences Service [licences@tallemu.com]” where it says - “Online Armor (Free) activation key” but there is no key in the email itself? What do I have to do to get one (or two) for both of my PCs?
Please clarify? - how do I enter the key into the program...after it has installed?
Apologies for the long post, yet I wanted to make sure that I covered everything that I wanted to ask by providing as many details as possible in this post.
All responses gratefully received - thanks for your help.
Regards

It should be, yes.

You should install the latest version, where I think this problem should be fixed. If not - please repost with details and we will work with you to solve it.

I don't have this personally so cannot really say right now - but it should just work automatically.

The email is basically with the wrong title. No need for a key.

Hi happy37
If OA doesn't do it automatically for you, you can manually add a rule to the computer that connects directly to the internet. Create an allow-All In/Out rule to UDP port 53 in your OAFW or Allow Out only works as well. This worked for me.

Thanks for your reply - will keep the point that you have made in when I come to uninstall Comodo and re-install OAFree tonight...
Will post back with results in due course...
Thanks again.

I use ICS with OA too. Works fine.
But I had to add a rule after studying the logs. DNS requests from the lan were not being passed on... Add a rule allowing outgoing UDP packets on port 53, and all is well.

Thanks for your tips and advice!!!
Have installed this on both of my PCs last night with no problems whatsoever... :D
I have a question, though...on the configuration page of the program, there is a field which says “resolve addresses” - does the checkbox next to it have to be ticked, and what purpose does ticking this serve?
I have not got round to setting up the rule to allow ICS on UDP/Port 53 - was running late last night...will do this tonight and will report back to let you know of any problems...
@MikeNash
What can I say except thanks for your initial advice and help - this helped me set up the program in no time at all!!!
Please keep up the good work!!! - do you need any help for more testing for the program?
Please let me know - I am willing to help.

Hi,
In active connections you will have domain name ( for example : localhost or www.google.com ) instead of IP adresses in remote adress column

Plus the box doesn`t need to be ticked. It`s your personal preference.

Hi MaB69, beetlejuice69 and others...
Thanks to all those that replied - I have looked at your suggestions regarding the “resolve addresses” question that I had and have set up my 2 PCs as to how I want them.
Also, @munckman and dickl:-
I have gone into the settings for OA Free and have created a rule for an allow-All In/Out rule to UDP port 53...all is well with ICS as well as the firewall. :D
Also, before I do close this post, how will we know if a new version of OA Free is released and available?
Are we notified by email, or do we have to check the website regularly for updates?
Please let me know and do all keep up the good work on here as well as with the products.

Hi happy37,
The best way currently is to check sticky posts in this forum until Mike make the change in the web site

Hi There - not much need for me to answer here, except to say that in future, if there is worthwhile news then if you give your email in OA Free registration you will receive an email update.
Otherwise, we will post at this site.
I plan the next update of OA (and Free) in December. It's going to be a nice one.

This post seems to answer my newby question about why I am not getting
internet access on the client computer of an ICS net work using online armor free on both client and host computers.
I need to from a previous post--------I added a rule allowing udp outbound on port 53 and everything fell into place.
I am just raising this here in case others have encountered the same problem. The automatic configuration went so well I wondered why that was not also set up.
Thanks from a very satisfied user!
I have been searching help files and this forum and am totally clueless about how precisely, step by step to add that rule. And do I add it to the host computer, client computer, or both?

Only host worked here. Client was left with OA default installation settings.
On the host configuration, select Firewall, and select new rule button.
Set allow, UDP Protocol, Direction Outbound, Logging defaults, All programs. In the in right panel, add port 53... Click ok, and that should do it.

Thank you dick1 for getting that cleared up. I can also confirm that you are 100% correct as I finally trial and error blundered into figuring out how to do it before you posted. Adding the rule to the client computer still left the client computer firewalled out by the host computer on my ICS lan. But as soon as I added the rule to the host computer, everything started working perfectly.
Online armor free is quite an impressive firewall already, and hopefully will get better in future. And other than this ICS lan special rule problem, it seems to be very user easy to install and maintain.
Having these forums for a resource is a giant plus.

Hi all
Couldn't agree more with what Lemon says!!!
Can't also wait for the next release!!! - And other than this ICS lan special rule problem, it seems to be very user easy to install and maintain.
@MikeNash:-
As per the point by Lemon above, can't the above functionality be built in for the next release of OA Free so that we will not have to add this rule for ICS/LAN access ourselves?
Please advise - keep up the good work with the products!!! :D :)

Dear Mike Nash,
Since this lan problem seems pervasive, may suggest a special sticky post
containing detailed step by step instructions on how to set up lans be added to the online armor free subsection of this forum. That way users seeking help on this issue can't miss it because its right up on top. And also be added to the help files of online armor also.
But these forums are great, I note that I got a PM from another user making sure I had solved my lan problem. So I should again thank Dick1 for posting in this thread and munchman for the PM.
