View Full Version : Desktop Dhortcuts - How to run safer?

Not a big problem but I use desktop shortcuts to different sites such as the local newspapers and other security sites.
I noticed if I'm already on the web these sites have the green border-runsafer mode.
If I put a shortcut to this site on the desktop it never shows as being run safer and no green border, even though it still has to connect to iexployer which is in the run safer mode.
Is there a way to correct this?
Use XP sp2.
Thanks, Dan

It does appear that the browser isn't being opened 'Safer' when launched via a shortcut. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything you can do to change this for now but maybe Tall Emu can comment on whether it's something that would be possible to implement in future :)

Thanks for the reply catprincess. :)
I think I'll just open them from my favorites for now.

CatPrincess,
Perhaps I misunderstood what you wrote above, but if my IE is set to 'run safer' and I launch/click a shortcut to a web site, IE will run safer (with the green border). If it did not, then I would say this was a bug...
The same is true with firefox if it is set to run safer.

With all browsers closed to begin with, a desktop shortcut to a website appears to launch Firefox 'Run Safer' for me, but not IE8. Might be some weirdness specific to Danny and I though perhaps.

minoka,
So if you click on a shortcut, are you saying it does run safer for you?

I'm beginning to think it's more a general problem.
I have 2 computers.
1) XP sp2 IE6 w/ OA++, Desktop
2) Vista Basic, IE8, sp2 w/ OA+, Laptop
Run safer works on neither from a desktop shortcut.

It looks like an IE specific issue with OA, at least to me. I don't know if anyone else can confirm that with Firefox (or a different browser) it works as expected like it did for me? With IE as default, I get the same result as Danny.

As I said, on my machine, win xp sp3, OA++, launching shortcuts via any of my "run safer" browsers (IE8 and FX 3.5.2) will work as intended: ie and/or fx will run safer and connect to the sites (with green border!).
Now, if your default browser (the one that will launch those shortcuts) is not set to run safer, then obviously it will connect normally, i.e., not safer, no green border.
Forgot these precisions: All browsers are closed and shortcuts on desktop !!!

Danny,
Could you tell us where one of your shortcuts would connect to?

Danny,
Could you tell us where one of your shortcuts would connect to?
Sure,
Yahoo, Wilders Security Forums, Detroit News and AT@T Wireless.
Again, if I connect to these sites when I'm on-line, they are in the run safer mode.
If I connect from a desktop short cut, they are not.
Thanks.

OK.
No issue. Shortcuts from desktop 'launch a safer' browser (which was completely shut down) every time.
My browsers are set to run safer via Programs and Advanced Options.
When you say I am online, I assume you mean your browser, IE, is open and you are using a bookmark to connect to the sites.

Yes, that is correct.
Thanks for your responses.

Hopefully someone has a solution for you.
If not, that's ok too.
It only takes an extra second to open the browser.
I was more curious as to why it does not work.
Thanks again,
your efforts are appreciated, :D

Thanks, danny9 :) I've passed this on to the development team, so hopefully this will be fixed for the next release :)

Meanwhile could you try with a new shortcut with a target like this
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php
Right click on desktop, choose new, shortcut
In location, browse to your iexplore.exe, click next, name the shortcut for instance wilders, click finish.
Then right click the shortcut called wilders, click properties, add the http address of the site so it reads like above. Click ok. Launch the shortcut.
I am using another computer (without OA++) and cannot test this shortcut.
I am curious though. Does it launch the 'safer' IE?

Cannot get it to work.
The address keeps coming up not valid.
Gonna try a few others I have.

Firefox is my default browser, but a couple of sites I visit do not connect unless they are viewed in IE. So, I made this kind of shortcuts to view them in IE when clicking their 'desktop' shortcuts. I also have IE in my SendTo folder, but clicking is faster than right-ckicking, then choosing SendTo, and one of the options I have in the SendTo submenu!
I am hoping this kind of shortcut launches IE in 'safer' mode if that is how it is set in OA.
I'll try tomorrow unless you report before then!
There should be a space between "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" and http://etc. win xp sp2 and win xp sp3.

There you go minoka!
It's working. :D
Wasn't putting in the space before and it does run safer.
Merci beaucoup!
